FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do you have a question you don't see here?  Comment below!

Can I come on the trip even if I don't want to earn WSU credit?
Yes.  Call the Study Abroad office to register (801-626-6600) and tell them you'd like to audit the course.  Since you are still utilizing WSU resources, the price is the same.

Are there any special health or safety concerns for this itinerary?
No.  You won't need any special immunizations or health checks.  Our destinations are as safe as any metropolis or safer.   It is probably best not to drink the tap water in Turkey, but bottled water is available cheaply everywhere.

Should I be nervous about being a Westerner in Islamic Turkey?
Turkey is an Islamic country, but one that prides itself on its secularism (its separation of church and state, like America).  Women do not need to wear head scarves, nor are there any particular laws regarding dress or drink.  Though Muslims don't drink, beer can be found everywhere, and American tourists are generally very warmly welcomed -- perhaps more than anywhere else we've been!

I'm nervous about getting myself to the meeting destination in Turkey.
Have no fear!  We'll coordinate the class and many of you can opt to travel together.  Plus, getting around Turkey by public transport is pleasant, cheap, and relatively easy.  Even if you don't speak Turkish.

How many people will be on the trip?
A maximum of 20 and minimum of 15 people can register for this course.  Spots are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Will there be a lot of walking and other physically demanding stuff?
Yes.  Because of the nature of the sites we're exploring, there is a physical requirement for this course.  In order to register, you must be able to:
            A. Walk 3 miles in an hour (this is a brisk pace); AND
            B. Walk 12 miles in a day
Not every day of the trip will be especially demanding, but there will be times when trekking at a fair pace will be required.  Walking surfaces of the ruined cities will be uneven and some trails to the sites will be rigorous.

I want my own room.  Is this possible?
The total price for this trip is based on triple--and sometimes quadruple--occupancy rooms.   In our experience, this is the best arrangement for the group dynamic, and for forming deep friendships.  Double occupancy rooms can be arranged for an additional charge.  Single occupancy (your own room) can probably by arranged at a significant additional cost but at this point it's not guaranteed.  It all depends on our group size and the hotels, but we'll do our best to accommodate!

Can I go early or stay later in Europe?
Certainly.  That's the beauty of booking your own flight to and from Europe -- you can plan your summer just as you please.  Simply show up in Selcuk on May 3!

I'm not an Honors Student.  Can I still register for the Honors credits?
Yes indeed.  Any WSU student can take an honors course; simply indicate which credits you want when you fill out your registration form.
